Security Council representatives gave the green light to an American proposal ending penalties on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria before his Washington trip the coming week.
Sharaa was named provisional head of state following his leadership in an insurgent campaign that removed Bashar al-Assad in winter 2024, concluding thirteen long years of internal conflict.
Washington's ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a different period" since Assad was deposed.
Previously, he faced global penalties while commanding the Muslim faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), previously associated with the extremist organization. Washington eliminated the organization from the catalog of international terrorist organizations during July.
The UN also removed penalties against the Syrian interior official Minister Anas Khattab.
The nation's top diplomat welcomed the removal of the sanctions, stating online: "The nation shows its gratitude to the United States and allied countries for assisting of Syria and its people."
The Syrian leader's Washington trip at the start of the week follows US President Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa had made "good progress" towards bringing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.
The pair met initially in May, during Trump's Riyadh trip during a visit to Arab nations.
After that meeting, the US president described him as a "resilient figure" possessing a "powerful background".
The HTS organization he led served as al-Qaeda's branch in Syria before he cut connections during 2016.
Monday's visit is not his initial visit to the United States this year. This past fall, he made history as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to present to the global assembly in Manhattan for nearly six decades.
During his address, he declared the nation was "regaining its deserved status within the global community" and demonstrated unity with the people of Gaza.
