The England head coach expressed his sadness that the Three Lions team did not enjoy more encouragement from the home crowd during their impressive friendly win against Wales on Thursday night.
The manager was pleased to see his team showcase their strong performance, with strikes from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the initial stages effectively ending the match. Yet, he was unhappy with the atmosphere at the national stadium.
“We had one and a half training days to prepare against a well-trained team and we performed excellently,” the coach commented. “It could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We missed the fourth and fifth goals. The stadium was silent. There was no support from the stands. Our team gave their all to win.”
“What more can you deliver in the first quarter? We didn’t let them escape. When you only hear just the Welsh supporters for half an hour, it’s regrettable because the squad earned more support today.”
“I support this statement. There’s nothing more than leading three goals up in a rivalry match. I hoped for a little more support in phases where it is challenging.”
“After halftime, to cheer us on, there was a bit too much support for Wales. It could have helped us to refocus, but that’s football and that is it.”
Away from potentially starting a dispute among supporters, the manager also raised eyebrows by omitting Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden from his squad. However the choice was backed up by Morgan Rogers excelling in the No 10 position and getting his maiden goal for his country.
“He is what he is,” Tuchel noted. “He is a No 10 and he is vying for his position.”
Craig Bellamy expressed hope that Wales, who face a strong Belgian side in a important World Cup qualifier on next week, learn from their awful first-half display.
“That’s the reason I scheduled this match,” Bellamy stated. “I need to see where we are. Where do we want to go? Who do we want to be? Today gives me motivation.”
Watkins was withdrawn at half-time after colliding with a goalpost and will be a doubt when the national team face Latvia in Riga in a qualifier on next week.
