Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Considering a collection of frogs is called an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.
Frogs are not at all new to the gaming landscape. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. Yet, their prevalence has seemingly exploded in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are legitimate amphibian adventures.
To understand this phenomenon, I undertook a detailed review into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's rising status in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat visible elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the wave in gaming looks especially pronounced.
Frankly, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs possess inherent design advantages for game developers.
A number of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.
Should these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be witnessing a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
