The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after losing a vote of confidence that came after his disputed online comments about Charlie Kirk.

The vote against George Abaraonye reached the necessary super-majority to remove him from office, according to an announcement from the organization.

Contentious Posts

The dispute began after the student reportedly shared messages on social media that seemed to welcome the death of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a university in Utah.

According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the phrase 'lol'.

The president-elect is also said to have written in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students seeming to express approval of the event.

Vote Outcome

The vote of confidence took place over the weekend, with outcomes revealed on Tuesday.

Society announcements indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast supporting removal, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.

The announcement confirmed that the president-elect was considered to have resigned in following the society's regulations.

Election Controversies

Proceedings were informally suspended early on Monday after the election official was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.

In a statement, the student asserted that the vote tally had been halted because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of process errors".

His response categorically refuted that any representative appointed by George had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Continuing Controversy

The student stated that significant concerns had been referred to the governing body and that he continued as president-elect.

His statement added that he was "grateful and honored to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of university members" who supported a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Critics have said that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".

External Reactions

On Friday, Mikey McCoy read out an public message to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.

The message criticized the society of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the killing of a ideological rival".

The statement warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".

The Oxford Union had earlier condemned the student's remarks after the activist's killing and stated that concerns submitted about him had been referred for official review.

The student leader had been one of several students to discuss with Kirk at the union in spring.
